Malawi's official birdlist to date is 642 species of which 228 of them are found in the Nkhotakota Game Reserve and its surrounding area. New species are identified on a regular basis and contribute to the expansion of the existing birdlist. In January 1998, Chia Lagoon and Sungu Island were added as new sites to the African Waterfowel Census which contributes to the International Waterfowel and Wetlands Research Bureau (IWRB), Wageningen, Holland.
